COAL SEAM GAS PROHIBITION (SYDNEY WATER CATCHMENT SPECIAL AREAS) BILL 2013
THURSDAY OCTOBER 17, 2013
We have many responsibilities – but none can be greater than providing people across Sydney and the Illawarra with access to clean, fresh drinking water.
While the legislation I have introduced today applies to the Sydney water catchment, Labor is also looking into similar protections in catchments across the Hunter, the Central Coast and Far Northern NSW.
LOCAL GOVERNMENT NSW ANNUAL CONFERENCE
WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 2, 2013
Today, more than a century after our Federation, the root of the problem facing state and local government is that funding remains centralised with the Commonwealth …
… while responsibility for service delivery and infrastructure is pushed down.
Very often, states can only access Commonwealth dollars tied to specific purposes or national agreements.
BUDGET REPLY SPEECH
THURSDAY JUNE 20, 2013
The fact is that increasing unemployment in this state is a serious and concerning trend and reversing it should be the number 1 priority.
Instead, the Government continues to cut jobs, cut services and cut infrastructure spending while once again displaying a mastery of spin.
SPEECH TO INSTITUTE FOR DEMOCRACY AND HUMAN RIGHTS
THURSDAY JUNE 6, 2013
The biggest story this year hasn’t been Barry O’Farrell’s cuts to frontline services and his failure to fix this state’s problems.
Instead the main story has been the ICAC proceedings involving members of the previous Labor government.
I’m convinced our mission is nothing less than to reconnect with the humane and ethical principles that led to the formation of the Labor Party in the first place.
SPEECH ON SUCCESSION TO THE CROWN (REQUEST) BILL 2013
WEDNESDAY MAY 29, 2013
This Bill represents a simple, necessary and in my view, long overdue, reform to the rules of succession for the British Monarchy, and as such, the Head of State of Australia.
Under the current rules, a girl born into the line of succession to the British throne is superseded by a younger brother...
...Under the proposed change, if William and Kate's eldest child is a daughter, then all else being equal, that daughter shall one day be Queen.
The gender of a person will, in future, have no bearing on their succession to the throne.
SPEECH TO NSW SECONDARY PRINCIPALS COUNCIL
FRIDAY MARCH 1, 2013
I will contest every cent of the Government’s $1.7 billion cuts.
And I will continue to meet with school principals, parents and teachers.
But in the end, my dispute with Mr O’Farrell is not just over a cut or an arbitrary dollar amount.
My dispute is over his fundamental lack of vision for our education system.
RAIL FUTURE CONFERENCE 2013
THURSDAY FEBRUARY 28, 2013
Public transport is a vital equity and social inclusion measure.
But the genius of public transport is that the benefits don't just accrue to users – they accrue to all of us.
Through positives such as reduced congestion on our roads. Increased productivity and economic growth. Urban renewal – communities that are more vibrant and connected. And reduced carbon emissions and noise pollution.
The best public transport systems work so seamlessly you barely notice them.
APOLOGY SPEECH DELIVERED TO NSW PARLIAMENT
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 20, 2012
Today we must step forward and take responsibility.
This single barbaric act – fraying the sacred bond between mother and child – changed lives.
And in many cases destroyed them.
On behalf of the NSW Labor Opposition, I rise to join with the Government and say clearly and unequivocally, to all those affected by the policy of forced adoption,
We are sorry.
SATURDAY JULY 14, 2012
Twelve months ago I stood before you as the new Leader of the oldest and greatest political party in Australia.
I spoke to you about the heartache of losing the last election and the importance of learning from our mistakes.
I said for the sake of our party we need to regain the trust of the people of NSW.
After 16 months of Barry O'Farrell I'm convinced we need to do these things – not for the sake of our party, but for the sake of this state.
NSW LABOR HOUSING AFFORDABILITY SUMMIT
TUESDAY FEBRUARY 12, 2013
Even if you’ve made it in the property market, you worry about whether your kids ever will.
And let's not forget our homeless population and the massive waiting lists for social and community housing.
We're a property-driven society here in NSW.
